The Tennessee Alliance for Progress (TAP) is a coalition
organized to build a progressive voice through the collaborative
efforts of its diverse member groups. The coalition members recognize
the advantage of identifying common ground and working together
to create healthy families and communities in Tennessee. Membership
in TAP indicates that your organization agrees with and supports
the Tennessee Alliance for Progress Mission and Principles (copy
attached).
Decision-Making Principles
| A. |
Major policy decisions require an 80% affirmative vote
by those present when a vote is taken. For administrative
matters a simple majority is sufficient. |
| B. |
It is the responsibility of member organizations to
make clear, in discussions with other members, what their
most basic positions are, so that TAP will not take stands
that are fundamentally opposed to member groups' interests. |
| C. |
Decisions made by the steering committee apply only
to the actions and policies of TAP and do not bind the
member organizations who retain complete autonomy. |
Member
organizations make the following commitments:
- A strong commitment to working in cooperation and a willingness
to work with all other member organizations.
- Specific goals and objectives that are congruent with
the mission of TAP.
- A recognition of the importance of electoral work in achieving
TAP's goals. Currently, TAP cannot not engage in candidate
endorsements because of its fiscal agent's non-profit 501(c)(3)
status. In the future, TAP may seek 501(c)(4) status to
make this possible.
- A commitment to working to connect issues and develop
an agenda for progress.
- A commitment to involving the organization's grassroots
membership in TAP's work.
- A willingness to commit some organizational resources,
such as time, money and people, to the work of TAP.
Coalitions may become members of TAP if it appears they
can meet some of the following criteria:
- The coalition represents an identifiable constituency
and/or a set of progressive issues.
- The coalition has the ability to make policy decisions
in the same time-frame as other member organizations.
- The coalition brings organizations into the effort that
would not be able to participate otherwise.
